Behind The Song : "Man On A Wire"

Nathan Tasker

“I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back.” Philippians 12-14 (The Message)

This song was written over the period of a few years. I started it with Jason Ingram, shortly after watching the documentary “Man on wire” (a great one, by the way). I then finished the song with Paul Moak (approx 2 years later!). It is one of the oldest songs on the new album, and one of the most consistently relevant for my own journey.

So much of life, especially life as a follower of Jesus, can feel like a balancing act. Paul summed it up well in Romans 7 “For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do”. I’ve always been drawn to the image of a man on a wire, moving along a tightrope with a yawning gap below him. It turns out the way to stay on the wire is not by looking to the right of left, or backwards, or down, but rather to keep your eyes focused ahead, to the goal, to the other side. I resonate with that idea - keeping my eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of the faith, knowing that one day He will welcome me safely home.

That is the first single, and title track off the new album, in a nutshell. I really hope you like "Man On A Wire".

Blessings, Nate.
